India Suspends Indus Water Treaty, Expels Pakistani Diplomats After Pahalgam Attack

NEW DELHI – Diplomatic relations between India and Pakistan have plunged to new lows after a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, with New Delhi initiating a series of punitive actions against Islamabad. Citing Pakistan’s alleged involvement in the attack, India has suspended the Indus Water Treaty, expelled Pakistani military diplomats, canceled regional diplomatic privileges, and closed the Wagah-Attari border.

Indus Water Treaty Put on Hold

In a landmark decision, India has suspended the 1960 Indus Water Treaty — a longstanding symbol of Indo-Pak cooperation over shared river resources. The treaty’s suspension could have dire consequences for Pakistan’s agricultural sector, which is heavily reliant on waters from the Indus River system. Indian officials claim the decision stems from Pakistan’s continued support for militant groups targeting India.

Pakistani Diplomats Expelled Over Security Concerns

New Delhi has expelled multiple Pakistani military diplomats, declaring them persona non grata and accusing them of activities “inimical to India’s national security.” The expulsions come amidst escalating tensions and ongoing accusations of cross-border terrorism linked to Pakistani intelligence networks.

SAARC Visa Cancelation and Border Closure

India has revoked the SAARC visa privileges of Pakistani officials, effectively isolating Pakistan from upcoming regional engagements. Simultaneously, the Wagah-Attari border has been shut down, cutting off a major route for trade and civilian movement. Indian authorities describe these measures as part of a broader strategy to tighten national security and intensify diplomatic pressure on Pakistan.

Pakistan Denies Allegations, Accuses India of False Flag Tactics

In response, Pakistan strongly denied involvement in the Pahalgam incident. Officials in Islamabad claimed the attack could be a “false flag” operation by India, aimed at justifying aggressive posturing and distracting global attention from human rights issues in Kashmir.

Foreign Minister stated:
“This attack is a fabricated ploy by India to shift global focus from its atrocities in Kashmir. We categorically reject all accusations and urge the international community to investigate the facts.”

Minister Awais Leghari Condemns India’s Move

Commenting on India’s suspension of the Indus Water Treaty, Pakistan’s Minister for Power, Awais Leghari, called it an act of aggression:
“India’s reckless suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty is an act of water warfare — a cowardly, illegal move. Every drop is ours by right, and we will defend it with full force — legally, politically, and globally.”

As tensions continue to rise, the international community watches closely, urging restraint and dialogue between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.
